Fmr Congressman: Failure of Republicans to Cooperate on Immigration Is Part of Problem
Border issue highlighted over court decision on Title 42
A former Republican congressman is blaming his erstwhile colleagues for helping fuel the problems with immigration which today is spilling over as issues related to the use of the Trump-era policy known as Title 42.
Over the objection of the Biden administration, the US Supreme Court said Tuesday that the controversial Trump-era border restriction known as Title 42 will remain in effect while legal challenges play out, a move that ensures that federal officials will continue to swiftly expel migrants at US borders at least for the next several months.
The 5-4 order is a victory for Republican-led states that urged the Supreme Court to step in and block a lower court opinion that ordered the termination of the authority.
Although Republicans have long blamed President Biden and his administration for an immigration “crisis” at the southern border, one-time Republican congressman David Jolly pointed a finger back at Republicans who have served in Congress.
“The reality is, as I served in Congress in Republican majorities, Republicans had failed to do anything on immigration reform and have refused to work with Democrats,” said Jolly, who today is a prominent political commentator and frequent critic of Republicans. “I had some very personal experiences during the Obama administration. As Republicans we said he doesn't have the authority with a pen and a phone, we have the authority in Congress. And then I asked our leaders, ‘What are we going to do with it?’ And they said, ‘Nothing.’
“And so part of this story is the failure of Republicans for the past 10 years to actually cooperate with Democrats and finally reforming our immigration system,” Jolly added.
