Fmr Ethics Attorney: In Terms of the Law, Biden Handled Classified Docs Discovery by the Book
President's cooperation praised
Despite continuing jabs from the political right, President Biden's earned a “thumbs up” from a former White House ethics lawyer on the handling of sensitive documents found in his unauthorized possession.
Sensitive government documents now have been found at both his home in Wilmington, Del., and a former office in Washington DC, and date to Biden's term as vice president.
He was not authorized to have them in his possession, and Biden's attorneys have said that, as soon as they were discovered, they were turned over to the National Archives.
Biden also is cooperating with the Justice Department and other authorities, according to his staff.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to look into the matter.
It's that ongoing cooperation that wins high marks from Norm Eisen, special counsel for ethics and government reform in the White House during the Obama administration, where he earned the nickname “Dr. No” for his stringent ethics and anti-corruption efforts.
“Biden has been cooperative from the beginning and continues to try to cooperate. There's been some questions — legitimate questions — about the PR angle of it, but in terms of the law, they've handled it by the book, and they'll continue to do that, I think,” Eisen said in an on-camera appearance on CNN.
