Former Obama AG Identifies 'Smoking Gun' to Indict Trump
Analysis comes from testimony offered Thursday in a public congressional hearing
Eric Holder, who served as US attorney general during the Obama administration, has identified what he said is the “smoking gun” that proves intent — and therefore leads a path to the indictment of Donald Trump.
The nation's former top law enforcement official made his announcement Thursday as the House select committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection held the fifth hearing in its series of public hearings intended to lay out its case that Donald Trump and associates acted illegally in their attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Richard Donoghue, acting deputy attorney general in the waning days of the Trump administration, testified Thursday from personal notes that the former president urged him to “just say the election was corrupt.”
In his notes, displayed on a large screen in the meeting room, Donoghue had written “just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest up to me and the R. congressmen’”
“The president said, ‘Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.’ So, Mr. Donoghue, that’s a direct quote from President Trump, correct?” asked Rep. Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, one of two Republican members on the select committee.
“That’s an exact quote from the president, yes,” Donoghue replied.
That quote should be the final piece federal prosecutors need to criminally indict Trump for his post-election schemes to try to remain in the White House for an illegal second term, according to Holder.
“Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen”. This is the smoking gun. Coupled with other testimony demonstrates both Trump’s substantive involvement and corrupt intent, requisite state of mind,” he tweeted.
