Former Republican Congressman: Trump Will Be a ‘Disastrous Candidate’ Head-to-Head with Biden
Trump's rivals must begin landing punches against the former president, Dent adds
The Republican Party will be headed to electoral ruin next year if it continues to coddle Donald Trump and embrace him as he faces nearly 100 felony charges, according to a former Republican congressman.
The dozen or so Republican presidential hopefuls who are seeking their party's nomination next year have to begin actually throwing political punches against frontrunner Trump rather than embrace him, said Charlie Dent, who represented a Pennsylvania district in Congress for more than a decade.
Rather than attack the former president on the campaign trail, Trump's rivals for the nomination are mostly strangely refusing to criticize him even as the number of criminal charges he's facing has swollen to nearly 100.
“Look, these candidates have to take down the front-runner. That is Donald Trump. They are not going to win by saying kind things about him, that he’s a victim, that’s the deep state that's after him, that these prosecutors are all mean. That is political malpractice,” Dent said. “I’ve run for office many times, I helped many candidates, and they have to attack the guy who's in front. They have to take him down.
“Ignoring him is not going to work. Then they’re just playing for second place. Why even run if you’re not going to go after the guy who's in the lead?” he asked. “I mean, I feel very strongly about this. That’s part of the reason why these candidates are stuck in single digits because they really aren't explaining the fact that Donald Trump is too great a risk.”
Giving Trump a pass will only set Republicans for defeat next year against President Biden, Dent said.
“He’s been indicted four times, 91 counts, he’ll be a disastrous candidate in a general election head-to-head with Joe Biden,” Dent said. “I know that voters in those polls are saying they think he can beat Biden. Well, he didn’t last time. Why do they think he can do it this time?”
