Former VP Lights Up Social Media With Ad Calling Trump a 'Coward'
Across the political spectrum, Dick Cheney is making an impression
Former vice president Dick Cheney's powerful new political ad on behalf of his embattled daughter, Rep Liz Cheney, is sparking fire across social media Friday ahead of the younger Cheney's Republican primary in which she could well lose her at-large seat representing Wyoming due to her opposition to former president Donald Trump.
“In our nation’s 246 year history there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our Republic than Donald Trump,” Dick Cheney said, talking straight to the camera and wearing a 10-gallon hat.
Although she has electrified the nation with her leadership of the House select committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, insurrection, Rep Liz Cheney has watched her stature within the Republican Party slide in recent years since she was ousted from House leadership because she refused to go along with Trump's “Big Lie” that somehow the 2020 election was “stolen” from him.
Facing potential loss in the upcoming Republican primary, the ad featuring her dad has attracted some unusual political bedfellows.
“I have had profound policy differences with former VP Dick Cheney in the past, but I wholeheartedly agree with him on the seriousness of the threat posed by Donald Trump. More Republicans, including former senior [US government] officials, need to speak up,” tweeted former Obama administration CIA chief John Brennan.
Meanwhile, the Dick Cheney ad is sparking equally strong emotions from Trump's supporters.
“When I get to Congress, I will be filing a Bill to remove Dick Cheney's name from all Federal Buildings,” tweeted Florida Republican state Rep Anthony Sabatini, who is running for Congress.
Added former Trump government aide-turned-opponent Olivia Troye: “Nothing triggers Republicans like Dick Cheney calling Trump a coward and a liar and calling the rest of the GOP out on their complicity and silence.”
