Liz Cheney comes out in favor of marriage equality, transgender rights
Rep Liz Cheney, of Wyoming, who began the year as the No 3 Republican in House leadership, has undergone a stunning political transformation in the months since.
Thrown out of leadership for her vote to impeach Donald Trump for his role in inciting the deadly January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol Building — as well as her steadfast refusal to support Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him due to massive Democratic fraud — the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney then went “rogue,” by becoming one of just two House Republicans who agreed to join the select committee investigating the events of January 6 over the objections of her GOP leadership.
And, now, she’s turning her back on her previous social conservative positions against marriage equality and transgender rights.
For Cheney, the shift on marriage equality is personal and a family issue, as her sister, Mary Cheney is a lesbian who has been married to her wife, Heather Poe, since 2012. Mary Cheney and Heather Poe have children.
Congresswoman Cheney revealed her change of heart on the issues in an on-air interview with Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes.
“I was wrong. I was wrong. I love my sister very much. I — love — her family very much. And — and — and I was wrong,” Cheney said. “It’s a very personal issue — and very personal for my family. I — believe that my dad was right. And my sister and I have had that conversation.”
“Wow, I was not expecting that,” Stahl interjected.
“This — this is an issue that we have to recognize you know, as, as human beings that we need to work against discrimination of all kinds in our country, in our state,” the congresswoman added. “We were at, at an event a few nights ago and, and there was a young woman who said, she doesn’t feel safe sometimes because she’s transgender. And nobody should feel unsafe. Freedom means freedom for everybody.”
