From Republican Congressmen to Voting for Harris: Walsh Retraces Journey
Vice president launches effort to attract GOP voters
With the introduction of an outreach initiative for Republican support, a former congressman is recounting how he and another one-time colleague went from conservative Republicans on Capitol Hill, to backing Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
Joe Walsh, an ex-congressman from Illinois was on social media to highlight the launch of Republicans for Harris, a new effort to get GOP voters to cross over this year to vote for the Democratic nominee for president over Donald Trump.
The surging Harris campaign launched this new initiative with an announcement Sunday.
Republicans for Harris is designed to “reach, persuade, and mobilize Republican voters,” according to a statement from the campaign.
Joe Walsh, a one-time Republican congressman who has become an outspoken critic of Trump, reposted the Harris campaign statement, adding his own thoughts on how he and another one-time Republican congressman from Illinois — Adam Kinzinger — came to support a Democrat for president.
“14yrs ago, @AdamKinzinger & I were 2 conservative Republicans elected to Congress. 14yrs later, Adam & I are 2 conservatives endorsing Kamala Harris. What happened? The GOP became an authoritarian-embracing cult. Republicans, join us. You’re better than Trump,” Walsh wrote.
Kinzinger was one of just two House Republicans willing to serve on the select committee which investigated the events surrounding the violent January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and Trump’s involvement in that insurrection.
Kinzinger left Congress in 2023, and publicly was backing President Biden’s bid for reelection before Biden dropped out and threw support behind Harris.
