FUNNY PAGES | ‘She Is Way Younger Than Trump and Wears Less Eyeliner than J.D. Vance’
Late-night comedians pivot to Kamala Harris
Editor’s Note: “The Funny Pages” is our occasional look at the intersection of late-night TV comedians with the politics and issues of our day.
Maybe they actually, actively support the new presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
Or maybe they’re just happy for the opportunity for new material.
Either way, the comic hosts of late-night TV have begun enthusiastically embracing Vice President Kamala Harris’s nascent campaign for the White House.
Since President Biden dropped out of the running for a second term Sunday, the last day or so became the first opportunity for late-night comedians to weigh in on the news.
Both NBC’s Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert on CBS immediately keyed in on the massive amount of donations the Harris campaign has hauled in just since Biden’s announcement and Harris began locking up the nomination for herself.
Fallon also cited a poll which finds the vice president leading Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup.
“Man, if you thought Kamala Harris was laughing hard before —” Fallon began, to loud laughter from his studio audience. “Yeah, it seems like voters are excited by the idea of having a a president who knows when their iPhone flashlight is on.
“Kamala is ahead, and I think I know why. She is way younger than Trump and wears less eyeliner than J.D. Vance,” he cracked. “Trump’s so panicked he was wiping away sweat with classified documents. It was interesting.”
Colbert waxed effusive over what he called “Kamala-mentum.”
“Democrats everywhere are feeling the Kamala-mentum. Her campaign broke a single-day fundraising record, with 1.1 million individual donors, and 60 percent of those donors were making their first contribution to the 2024 cycle,” Colbert said, to cheering and applause from his studio audience. “Holy cow! I mean, first of all, welcome to democracy, my friends! Your donation comes with a great reward: a thousand E-mails saying, ‘Stephen, I’m asking one last time.’
“Voters are motivated, clearly! Sunday night, Harris raised $1.5 million on a Zoom call with 44,000 Black women,” Colbert added, to more audience cheering and applause. “That’s pretty incredible.
“It was so heavily attended that organizers had to ask Zoom to extend the capacity limit for the meeting. Wait a second. You can just call zoom and ask them to do stuff? ‘Hello, Mr. Zoom? Can you make it look like I’m paying attention when in actuality in another tab, I’m browsing boat accessories?’” he riffed.
