'Georgia Should Be a State of Grace'
Democrat Abrams features appeal for abortion rights in rematch with Kemp
Stacey Abrams, the Democratic Party superstar campaigning on a rematch for her narrow loss four years ago to Republican Brian Kemp, is making abortion rights an explicit part of her pitch for governor of Georgia.
Abortion rights are now severely curtailed in the Peach State, following the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade and upend nearly a half century of national abortion rights.
Georgia's state law — officially titled the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act — would ban most abortions once fetal cardiac activity is detected, usually after about six weeks into a pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant.
Now that Roe is overturned, federal courts could soon allow the LIFE Act to take effect.
Abrams, who's become a celebrity and a leading Democratic voting rights activist since she lost to Kemp by just 54,723 votes statewide in 2018 amid numerous voting irregularities, wants Georgia to chart a different course.
“Abortion is a medical decision between a woman and her doctor. Georgia should be a state of grace and a state of mercy — not a state where the governor makes it his decision to deny women medical care,” she tweeted Tuesday.
