‘Goose-stepping Soldiers’: Republican Gives Military Parade Thumbs Down
Procession in DC coincides with celebrations for US Army, Trump’s birthday
The military parade set for the streets of Washington DC is not a good look.
That’s according to a Republican senator, who said that the planned procession reminds of the military parades common in such authoritarian countries as Russia and North Korea.
A parade featuring US troops, tanks and more is expected in the nation’s capital Saturday, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the US Army as well as Donald Trump’s 79th birthday.
The event has attracted controversy for its cost, as well as its authoritarian overtones.
And it’s not something that Sen Rand Paul (R-Ky) would have done.
In an interview with NBC News on Tuesday, Paul said he has never been a fan of “goose-stepping soldiers and big tanks and missiles rolling down the street,” and he “wouldn't have done it.”
“I’m not sure what the actual expense of it is, but I’m not really, you know, we were always different than, you know, the images you saw in the Soviet Union and North Korea. We were proud not to be that,” Paul said.
Paul has been a frequent critic of Trump’s from their own political party. The senator most recently broke with Trump over his tariff policies.
