‘He’s Got Nothing Else To Do’: Trump Wants to Debate President Biden
RNC decided to pull out of regular quadrennial presidential debates
President Biden is laughing off Donald Trump’s desire to debate him “immediately.”
Trump, who appears set for a rematch against Biden by being on course to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, said Monday that he wants to debate Biden “immediately.”
“I’d like to debate him now because we should debate. We should debate for the good of the country,” Trump said in an interview with a right-wing radio host.
Historically, the incumbent president debates his rival only after the primary season is over, and then only in the weeks leading up to the general election in encounters managed by the Commission on Presidential Debates.
However, the Republican National Committee decided in 2022 to withdraw from presidential debates organized by the bipartisan commission.
Biden was asked about Trump’s proposal during a campaign stop in Las Vegas, Nev.
“He wants to debate you immediately, he says,” a reporter told the president.
“Immediately?” Biden asked.
“Yes,” the reporter answered. “Will you debate him?”
“Well, if I were him, I’d want to debate me too. He’s got nothing else to do,” Biden quipped.
