Homeland Security Secretary Blames Donald Trump For Border Trouble
Mayorkas points finger at Trump budget cuts
Some 212,672 crossings of the border by undocumented immigrants were recorded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in July, according to the head of the department.
Further, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas laid blame for the trouble at the border, right at the feet of former president Donald Trump.
“Tragically, former president Trump slashed our international assistance to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras — slashed the resources that we were contributing to address the root causes of irregular immigration,” Mayorkas said in a Thursday press conference. “Another reason is the end to the cruel policies of the past administration, and the restoration of the rule of law of this country, that Congress has passed — including our asylum laws which provide humanitarian relief.”
The Trump administration undertook hardline, and cruel, approaches to stemming the flow of immigration across the southern border, including the forced separation of immigrant children from their parents.
Continuing his description of the origins of the border trouble, Mayorkas added, “Thirdly, and importantly, is the resurgence of the economy in the United States, and the gleam of the American promise, once again.
“We are facing a serious challenge at our southern border — and the challenge is, of course, made more acute — more difficult —because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also made more difficult because of the fact that the previous administration dismantled our asylum system,” Mayorkas said. “Nevertheless, we meet challenges — we meet difficult ones.
“We do so with our heroic workforce, our expertise, our plans, and our execution of our plans,” he said.
