House Republicans Are Moving to Impeach Joe Biden for ‘Reasons Unstated’
Republicans can't say specifically what the president did wrong
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, apparently under pressure from far-right elements of the House, approved on Tuesday opening a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden.
Except: Even House Republicans can't say that Biden's committed a crime or any wrongdoing.
McCarthy, under pressure to deliver must-pass legislation by the end of the month to keep the federal government funded and open, allowed the impeachment inquiry to mollify far-right Republicans who generally oppose those spending bills.
House Republicans claim Biden engaged in corruption with his son Hunter, except that even their own star witness — Hunter Biden associate Devon Archer — said that there's no evidence of corruption or wrongdoing by the president.
“I have not seen any of it that links to President Biden to Hunter Biden’s activities at this point. I’ll be getting a briefing later in the week. I’m looking forward to understanding more what the Oversight Committee has uncovered, but at this point I’ve not seen that evidence,” said Ken Buck, of Colorado, one of the most publicly skeptical Republicans regarding the impeachment inquiry.
Rep Jamie Raskin, of Maryland, who as ranking member on the House Oversight Committee is the Democratic counterpart to Rep James Comer (R-Ky), who is the leader of the impeach-Biden charge, called the effort “ridiculous.”
“I mean, you’ve got people who voted not to impeach Donald Trump for inciting a violent insurrection against a union, either because they don’t think that’s a crime or because they don’t think the evidence was there — even though the evidence was overwhelming, we did have 10 Republicans who joined us in the House and seven Republicans who voted to convict in Senate — but in any event, you’ve got all these Republicans, who cannot bring themselves to vote to impeach Donald Trump who tried to overthrow a presidential election and attacked our constitutional order, now moving to impeach Joe Biden for reasons unstated,” Raskin said. “I think that that’s absurd. I applaud Congressman Buck from Colorado, who was a district attorney, who was the chief of the criminal division of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Colorado. He is someone who understands the criminal law and understands the constitutional law, and he knows that the whole thing is absurd.
“There’s no evidence of treason, bribery, or high crimes and misdemeanors. There’s no evidence of any crime at all by Joe Biden, so all of this is clearly being driven by Donald Trump who wants to establish this counterfeit moral equivalency between the two of them just so he can say he’s running against another impeached president,” he added.
Republican politics are driving McCarthy's OK of an impeachment inquiry, according to Rep Dan Goldman.
“He is trying to save himself, save his own speakership, as he has been trying to do since January 3,” he said , referring to the day Republicans took control of the House. “That’s what this is all about.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz, of Florida, one of the last far-right Republican holdouts to support McCarthy as speaker earlier this year, threatened on the House floor to oust McCarthy from the speaker’s post.
