‘How Good Was the Sex? Good Enough to Risk Democracy Over?’: Comedians Roast Fani Willis
DA's relationship with prosecutor threatens Trump election-interference trial in Georgia
Late-night TV comedians used their humor to savage the district attorney in Fulton County Ga., after a previously undisclosed intimate relationship with a prosecutor threatens to upend an election-interference case against Donald Trump.
The comics verbally mauled Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in their Thursday evening monologues, hours after she took the witness stand in an Atlanta-area courtroom over questions about her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Willis last summer brought a raft of criminal charges against Trump and 18 codefendants related to efforts to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in an attempt to keep Trump in power.
One of those codefendants, Mike Roman, is seeking to have Willis and Wade disqualified, alleging their relationship constituted a conflict of interest. His lawyer attempted to prove Willis financially benefitted from her relationship with Wade.
If Roman and his attorney are successful in disqualifying Willis and Wade, it could delay trials of Trump and others beyond the November election, in which Trump is seeking to return to the White House.
The fact that Willis might have let a personal relationship potentially hinder such an important election-interference case appeared to anger hosts of late-night TV.
“Here's the thing: Yes, Donald Trump and his associates are on trial in this, one of the most important cases in the history of our republic,” began late-night host Stephen Colbert. “So, and I’ve just got one follow-up question here: Given that if you're removed from the prosecution, it could delay this trial until after the election, how good was the sex? Good enough to risk democracy over? Because I’ve never had sex that good. You know what really feels good? Donald Trump going to prison.”
Jordan Klepper, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, also piled on.
“Are you kidding me?! Seriously! Trump might get off because these two were getting off? The case might get derailed because these two were getting railed? Are we [bleep] because they [bleep]? I can’t believe a legal team’s sexual appetite might destroy this case,” Klepper complained. “Now I finally understand why Trump hired Rudy Giuliani as his lawyer. No one’s risking their case to see what he’s packing.”
