Hunter Biden: Republicans Have Taken ‘the Light of My Dad’s Love for Me and Presented It as Darkness’
President's son took aim at MAGA attack machine
With Republicans inside demanding a closed-door session from him, President Biden's sole-surviving son stood out in the December chill of Washington DC, in front of the US Capitol to speak directly with the American people.
After years of being nothing more than the chief boogeyman of the Republican party, Hunter Biden made remarkably personal remarks Wednesday, the same day that Republicans on the House Oversight Committee were demanding he meet with them for a deposition behind closed doors.
Biden's arrival on Capitol Hill also coincided with House Republicans voting to approve an impeachment inquiry against his father without evidence, or even certain of the crime President Biden was to have committed.
Republicans have been baselessly — and without evidence — alleging some unknown corrupt connection between the president and his son's business dealings.
Hunter Biden, who spent years as an addict before getting sober, has — with his infamous laptop computer — been working persistent focus of Republican ire.
“No matter how many times it is debunked, they continue to insist that my father's support of Ukraine against Russia is the result of a non-existent bribe,” Hunter Biden said Wednesday. “They displayed naked photos of me during an oversight hearing.
“And they have taken the light of my dad's love, the light of my dad's love for me, and presented it as darkness. They have no shame,” he added.
The younger Biden lashed out at the Republicans who have been vilifying him for so long.
“For six years, MAGA Republicans, including members of the House committees who are in a closed door session right now have impugned my character, invaded my privacy, attacked my wife, my children, my family, and my friends,” he said. “They have ridiculed my struggle with addiction. They belittled my recovery. And they have tried to dehumanize me, all to embarrass and damage my father who has devoted his entire public life to service.
“For six years, I have been the target of the unrelenting [Donald] Trump attack machine shouting, ‘Where's Hunter?’ Well, here's my answer: I am here,” he said.
Hunter had the support of the White House Wednesday.
“Look, you know, the president was certainly familiar with what his son was going to say. And I think what you saw from the heart, from his son,” said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “And you heard me say this, you heard the president say this, ‘When it comes to the president and the first lady, they are proud of him continuing to rebuild his life. They are proud of their son.”
