‘I Can’t Tell If Y’All Are for Anything Other than Obstruction and Cruelty’
Rep Jasmine Crockett flames Republicans for border hypocrisy
A Texas Democrat who quickly has developed a reputation as one of her party’s most outspoken lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week put House Republicans on blast for their hypocrisy on border security.
Rep Jasmine Crockett took Republicans to task for wanting to use issues related to the US southern border and immigration as political cudgels against their opponents while President Biden and his administration take concrete steps to help solve the problems.
Republicans have long attacked Biden for his border policies, but those attacks have ramped up with their planned attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Mayorkas would be the first Cabinet official to be impeached since 1876, although he would be unlikely to be convicted and removed from office by the Democratic Senate.
Regardless, the freshman congresswoman from a Dallas-area district called out Republicans at a hearing of the House Oversight Committee on the Biden administration’s enforcement of US immigration law.
“It’s clear President Biden is trying to give state and local governments and non-profits federal resources to support temporary food, shelter and other services, but MAGA House Republicans are refusing to give those cities and states those resources,” Crockett said. “President Biden has tried to put 1,300 more Border Patrol agents at the border to help, but Republicans have obstructed that request. Republicans want to cut the flow of fentanyl coming into the United States, President Biden has tried to give our border agents a hundred new cutting-edge inspection devices and add 1,000 additional law enforcement personnel, Republicans obstructed that request.
“Honestly, I can’t tell if y’all are for anything other than obstruction and cruelty. Just take a look at my governor last week,” she added, referring to Republican Gov Greg Abbott. “He said, and I quote, ‘The only thing we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border because of course the Biden administration would charge us with murder.’ I know Gov Abbott doesn’t understand the law, but let me say this: ‘That absolutely would be murder.’”
