'I Don't Think He Should Be Speaker of the House'
After her loss, Liz Cheney pans House Republican Kevin McCarthy
Fresh off her drubbing in the Wyoming Republican primary last week, Rep Liz Cheney continues to exercise her waning influence to suggest that House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy should not be elevated to the speakership next year.
Cheney last week lost a lopsided contest to fellow Republican Harriet Hageman, punished for standing up against Donald Trump, his “Big Lie” baseless election claims, and his other myriad other apparent crimes.
Although Cheney won't be joining them, political analysts give her fellow Republicans a very possible chance to retake the majority in the House.
That would give McCarthy, of California, the potential to move up to the speakership, a position that he is not qualified for, according to Cheney.
“Well, my views about Kevin McCarthy are very clear. The speaker of the House is second in line to the presidency, it requires somebody who understands and recognizes their duty, their oath, their obligation, and he’s been completely unfaithful to the Constitution and demonstrated a total lack of understanding of the significance and the importance of the role of speaker,” Cheney said in a Sunday television news interview. “So, I don’t believe he should be speaker of the House, and I think that’s been very clear.”
Cheney has clashed with McCarthy since last year when he stood by as House Republicans stripped her of her position in House leadership due to her opposition to Trump's lies and his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection.
Cheney further defied McCarthy when she chose to become just one of two Republicans willing to serve on the House select committee investigating the events surrounding that January 6 insurrection.
In the interview broadcast by ABC News, Cheney's interviewer sought to clarify her remarks by asking, “So, it sounds like that's a yes, you think the country would be worse off if he were speaker of the House?”
Cheney replied, “I don't think he should be speaker of the House.”
