‘I Don’t Want to Have to Draw My Rifle’: Georgia Lawmaker Suggests Trump Prosecution Could Lead to Civil War
Trump also has stoked violence in response to his indictments
A Georgia state lawmaker is hinting publicly that the prosecution of Donald Trump for trying to overturn the result of the 2020 election in his state could well lead to violence.
Republican state Rep Colton Moore raised the specter of Trump's prosecution in Fulton County leading to “civil war.”
Trump last week surrendered at the Fulton County jail, leading to the first-ever mugshot of a former US president.
He has been charged, along with 18 other defendants, with participating in a sprawling criminal and racketeering conspiracy to interfere with Democrat Joe Biden's lawful win of Georgia in the election, as part of a larger scheme to help Trump illegally retain power beyond the end of his term.
Despite evidence of Trump's alleged crimes, those on the political right have found themselves triggered by the succession of indictments the former president has faced this year, culminating in the Fulton County case brought by District Attorney Fani Willis.
Trump, who is also the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, has repeatedly posted threats on social media regarding the cases against him, despite being admonished not to by judges overseeing the various cases against him.
Moore has echoed these threats of violence from the right in lashing out against the lawful prosecutions of the former president.
“I mean, you know, I told one senator, I said, ‘Listen,’ I said, ‘We’ve got to put our heads together and figure this out. We need to be taking action right now. Because if we don’t, our constituencies are gonna be fighting it in the streets,’” Moore said in an interview with right-wing media. “Do you want a civil war? I don’t want a civil war. I don’t want to have to draw my rifle. I want to make this problem go away with my legislative means of doing so.”
Republican members of Congress — including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, of Ohio — also are looking at ways to interrupt the various state and federal cases against Trump.
