‘I’d Sleep Better At Night’: Trump Pick for FEMA Gets Endorsement
Incoming president spread lies about the disaster agency ahead of the election
A prominent Democratic congressman is voicing support for Donald Trump’s reported choice to head up the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Rep Eric Swalwell, of California, is backing his Democratic colleague from Florida, Rep Jared Moskowicz, to take over at the top of the federal disaster-response agency.
Trump reportedly is considering Moskowicz for the top job at FEMA. Before entering Congress, Moskowicz held a similar position as director of Florida’s state-level FEMA.
Moskowicz led the Florida relief agency during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FEMA was at the center of a sustained disinformation campaign ahead of the presidential election, in which Trump and his allies falsely claimed during a key FEMA response to hurricane disasters that the agency was spending money on unrelated matters for undocumented migrants.
At this point, however, Moskowicz would be a wise choice at the agency while Trump is president, according to Swalwell.
“I want our country to succeed. I want our country to be safe. Jared Moskowitz is a bright colleague of mine. He‘s done this job at the state level, and I would feel better having him there than someone like RFK as far as qualifications go and people going into the administration, I‘ll leave that to the president.”
Robert F Kennedy Jr is Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, despite Kennedy’s well-known penchant for conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine stances.
“I do think Moskowitz is bright, and I‘d sleep better at night if he was in charge of disasters that God knows who else Donald Trump could put in charge,” Swalwell said.
