‘I’m a Member of Congress, You’re Cutting Me Off’: CNN Shuts Down Pair of Republicans
Hosts refuse to allow misinformation on the air
CNN hosts separately cut off two different Republican lawmakers Monday, when the hosts refused to spread falsehoods on-camera.
The news network separately interviewed Reps Beth Van Duyne, of Texas, and Brandon Williams, of New York, on the situation with the southern border, in the lead-up to the second attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
But both lawmakers were taken off-air for trying to misrepresent the truth.
Such on-camera fact-checking of Republicans is becoming more common.
First up was Van Duyne and host Brianna Keilar.
Van Duyne began by bemoaning deaths “untold to our country,” claiming that fentanyl was coming into the United States by way of undocumented immigration.
Keilar kept trying to correct the Texas Republican: “Ma’am, American citizens, American citizens bringing fentanyl.”
With Van Duyne insisting things like, “Mexican cartel are the best friends of Mayorkas.”
Finally, Keilar gave up and cut to President Biden’s statement at the White House.
A short while later, CNN’s Jim Sciutto was on with Williams, and things were even more strained.
Williams kept insisting on the false assertion that bipartisan border reform, which was recently killed at the behest of Donald Trump, would have allowed 5,000 undocumented migrants to enter the United States daily.
“It was not allowing them in. It said, ‘At 5,000 encounters, you don't entertain any more encounters at the border,’” Sciutto corrected.
Williams became agitated at being corrected.
“I'm sorry, is that respecting each other? Is that what you‘re getting at here? Is respecting each other — ” the congressman said.
“Well, I will challenge you when you say something that's not true,” Sciutto said.
“I'm, a member of Congress, you‘re cutting me off. It absolutely is true. And — ” Williams continued.
“Only when you say something not true,” Sciutto added.
