‘I’m Gonna Do It Whether the Women Like It or Not’: Trump Seems Determined To Worsen The Gender Gap
Republican's misogynistic record would say that he doesn't protect women
With just days before Election Day, Donald Trump seems determined to make the problem he has with women voters even worse.
Most public opinion polls have long shown a yawning gap between the support Trump gets between men and women.
Women usually back Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris — often by double-digit amounts.
Harris would be the first woman elected president of the United States.
Even with this reality, Trump continues to pursue a paternalistic and sexist attitude towards the very women he needs to turn to vote for him, if he wants to return to the White House.
“And my people told me, about four weeks ago, ‘I want to protect the people, I want to protect the women of our country. I want to protect the women.’ ‘Sir, please don't say that.’ ‘Why?’ They say, ‘We think it's — we think it's very inappropriate for you to say so.’ ‘Well, I'm president, I want to protect the women of our country,” Trump said Wednesday at a campaign event in battleground Green Bay, Wis.
“They said, ‘Sir, I just think it's inappropriate for you to say,’” Trump added. “I pay these guys a lot of money. Can you believe it? I said, ‘Well, I'm gonna do it whether the women like it or not. I'm gonna protect them. I'm gonna protect them from migrants coming in. I'm gonna protect them from other countries that want to hit us with missiles and lots of other things.’”
Trump’s record, however, would seem to indicate otherwise.
A judge just last year found it “substantially true” that the former president raped writer E Jean Carroll decades ago in the dressing room of a New York department store.
And, of course, Trump is well-known for the misogynistic language he used in the Access Hollywood tape that emerged when he first ran for president eight years ago, in which he boasted about grabbing women by their genitals.
Further, Trump is responsible for appointing three right-wing justices who helped overturn the national right to abortion for women two years ago, which has left many American women without the healthcare that they need, MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski said.
“So when you look at him as the protector, just keep that in mind. I’m not sure what he’s talking about. It’s kind of some sick, distorted fascist way,” she said, on-camera Thursday morning.
