‘I’m Honored to Have Their Support’: Harris Thanks Liz, Dick Cheney for Endorsement
Prominent Republicans are voting for the Democrat for president
Vice President Kamala Harris is expressing her gratitude to two members of one of the nation’s most prominent Republican families for publicly backing her for president over Donald Trump.
Former congresswoman Liz Cheney and her father, Duck Cheney, announced in recent days that they would be voting for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz.
It was something of a stunning revelation. Both Cheneys were known to have broken with Trump some time ago. But the affirmative decision to vote for the Democratic ticket is extraordinary.
The elder Cheney served as vice president for President George W Bush and worked in Republican administrations back to Gerald Ford’s.
“I think what they, as leaders who are well respected, are making an important statement that it is okay — if not important — to put country above party. I am honored to have their support,” Harris said during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh, Pa. “I think it’s an important statement right now. A lot of what I think is happening and I was just talking with folks in Pittsburgh about it, people are exhausted about the division and the attempts to divide us as Americans.
“And them stepping up to make this public statement I think is courageous but also for people like the folks I was just talking with, it really reinforces them that we love our country,” she added.
