‘I’m Obviously Not Joe Biden’: Kamala Harris Makes Wide-ranging Appearance With Colbert
Vice president makes direct appeal to those affected by deadly hurricane
Continuing her recent media blitz, Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance Tuesday as a guest on late-night TV host Stephen Colbert’s popular CBS TV program that was, at turns, comedic and quite serious.
Colbert, known as a persistent critic of Republican Donald Trump, provided a friendly forum for Harris as the Democrat running against Trump this year.
In recent days, Harris also appeared on the TV chat show, The View, venerable radio personality Howard Stern’s program, and the TV news magazine, 60 Minutes.
Things with Colbert immediately got off to a nice start when she came out to the studio audience chanting, “Kamala! Kamala! Kamala!”
“Oh. They all know how to pronounce my name,” Harris said. “Thank you all. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you.”
“I was thinking the same thing. What did you just notice?” Colbert asked.
“I noticed that a whole lot of people know how to pronounce my name,” Harris said, mocking Trump and others on the political right who purposely mispronounce her name as a personal insult.
Colbert asked Harris what, if elected, she would do differently than the current administration of President Biden.
“Sure. Well, I mean, I’m obviously not Joe Biden,” she replied.
“I noticed,” Colbert quipped, to laughter and applause from his studio audience.
“And so that would be one change. Also, I think it’s important to say, with 28 days to go, I’m not Donald Trump,” Harris added, to further cheering and applause.
”And so when we think about the significance of what this next generation of leadership looks like were I to be elected president, it is about — frankly, I love the American people and I believe in our country,” she added. “I love that it is our character and nature to be an ambitious people. You know, we have aspirations, we have dreams, we have incredible work ethic. And I just believe that we can create and build upon the success we’ve achieved in a way that we continue to grow opportunity and, in that way, grow the strength of our nation.
“So, for example, my economic policies, I think of it and I have named it as creating an opportunity economy. So it’s about things like investing in small businesses. I love our small businesses,” Harris said.
In one deadly serious moment with Colbert, the vice president directly addressed Americans who have been affected by Hurricane Helene and who might have been exposed to disinformation spread by Trump and some of his allies.
“Well, first of all, to all of those folks in North Carolina and Georgia, please know that [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] and the people on the ground are there to help you. You are entitled to help,” she said. “There’s a lot of misinformation and I beseech you, I beg you to please not pay attention to it, because there are whole lot of folks who are there to give you help and aid in terms of the immediate aftermath and what people need to do in terms of getting through the height of this emergency and this crisis, but also in terms of long-term help.”
