‘I’m Opposed To All Violence, Starting With the Jan 6 Insurrection’
When right-wing journalist tries to troll Raskin, congressman throws it right back
A right-wing journalist tried to troll a prominent Democratic congressman, trying to get the lawmaker to denounce recent property damage at Tesla dealerships.
But the congressman turned the tables on the right-winger, refusing to take the bait.
Journalist Nicholas Ballasy approached Rep Jamie Raskin, of Maryland, outside of the US Capitol Building, asking the lawmaker to react to the recent spate of protests against billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors, in reaction to Musk’s work with Donald Trump to dismantle entire functions of the federal government and indiscriminately fire tens of thousands of federal workers.
Although most protests against the electric vehicle maker have been peaceful, a few have involved damage to Tesla vehicles and electric charging stations.
“I’m opposed to all violence, beginning with the January 6 violent Insurrection where 140 of our police officers were attacked by Proud Boys and Oath Keepers and other members of the mobs and the militias that were sent out by Donald Trump,” Raskin said.
As one of his first acts back in office, Trump issued blanket pardons to rioters involved in the January 6 — including those who committed violence against police and others.
“And of course I’m opposed to violence against property, too,” Raskin added. “I haven’t heard about a boycott, but I’m sure there’s a natural boycott going on because people say that Tesla sucks. But it’s a free market, so everybody can make their own decision about that.”
Ballasy continued to try to press Raskin, trying to get him to defend Tesla for the sake of electric vehicles to combat climate change, saying, “Do you think it defeats the purpose, though, of climate change, if they’re out there destroying —“
Raskin cut him off with, “Is it the only electric car? Is that the only —“
Ballasy continued to try to carry water for Musk, claiming, “No, but they’re the leader. They’re revolutionary.”
The truth is that a number of car manufacturers now make electric vehicles competitive with Tesla products.
Even still, Raskin ended the encounter by mocking Ballasy.
“I’m not in the market for car now, but when I am, I’ll let you know what my calculation’s about that,” the congressman said.
