‘I’m Trying Not to Laugh’: Political Right Roasted for Taylor Swift Conspiracies
Pop star considered weapon for Democrats
She may have sold 200 million records, and headlined the biggest concert tour of all time.
But Taylor Swift is not just the hottest pop star of our time.
No, she’s really a secret weapon for President Biden and the Democrats.
That's at least the new, bizarre conspiracy theory among the political right which comedians and others have begun mocking, mercilessly.
With her boyfriend’s Kansas City Chiefs headed to Super Bowl LVIII, influential MAGA personalities are promoting the deranged notion that Swift is part of a sprawling psychological operations plot staged by the NFL and Democratic Party to deliver the 2024 presidential election to Biden.
The attacks on Swift have been steadily building for weeks (see Fox News host Jesse Watters asking on his prime time program earlier this month if Swift is a “Pentagon asset,” for example), but they now appear to be at a fever pitch.
Which makes these half-brained ideas ripe for making fun of.
Late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel took his shot on his program Tuesday night.
“So let me get this straight. The same people who believe Joe Biden has dementia and needs Kamala Harris to feed him butterscotch tapioca every night also believe that he has somehow planned and executed a diabolically brilliant scheme to fix the NFL playoffs so that the biggest pop star in the world can pop up on the jumbotron during the Super Bowl in-between a Kia and a Tostitos commercial to hypnotize her 11-year-old fans into voting for Joe Biden,” Kimmel japed, to cheering and applause from his studio audience. “I mean, it makes sense. It makes total sense. These people. These people, they think football is fake and wrestling is real.”
MSNBC host Joy Reid did likewise.
“Now, none of this should be surprising, coming from the camp that brought you Pizzagate and the big lie, but it is worth asking, why are they so obsessed with Taylor Swift? It might have something to do with the fact that back in early 2016, Swift was unwittingly made into an icon by the alt-right. White supremacists adopted her as their Aryan goddess, claiming that she secretly espouses far-right beliefs and was just waiting for Donald Trump to get elected to make her true views known. Which didn't happen, it was actually quite the opposite,” Reid said.
Even CNN’s serious news host, Dana Bash, got in on it.
“Have you heard the latest conspiracy theory making the rounds rounds? Stay with me. Prominent right-wing figures are speculating that Taylor Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce is made up and that the Super Bowl will be rigged for Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs, and the endgame is swift endorsing Biden after the big game.
“Here are some of the messages — I was trying not to laugh — circulating on social media,” Bash added, as she began to read a litany of bonkers right-wing social media posts, on-air.
