In Attempt To Blame Biden for Attacks on Israel, Republicans Spread Disinformation
Claim that $6 billion for Iran paid for Hamas strike is false
Republicans, including multiple candidates for president, have begun spreading baseless claims that President Biden helped directly enable the attack over the weekend against Israel by Hamas.
Specifically, insisted, without evidence, that the United States funded the attacks by suggesting that $6 billion in oil revenue that the Biden administration recently unfroze as a result of a prisoner exchange with Iran, which has historically funded Hamas, was used to carry them out.
Such claims have been solidly debunked, including by a reporter on the right-wing Fox News network.
Republicans are trying — falsely — to blame Biden and his administration for attacks over the weekend launched by Hamas which have left more than 1,200 and has sparked a fierce retaliation by Israel.
From Donald Trump, to Sen Tim Scott of South Carolina, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley and more, Republicans are actively spreading false claims in an attempt to discredit Biden, including the $6 billion released to Iran under strict monitoring.
“Look, we have been quite clear that we just have a fundamentally different view of this situation and that we believe those criticisms are not well-founded and frankly are inaccurate,” said Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer. “Any implication that money that has not yet been spent, not a single dollar of that money has yet been spent, had any role in the attacks that took place and planning them, equipping the parties that conducted them, just frankly does not make any sense.
“And as we have been clear, that money can only be spent on humanitarian items, on food, on agricultural products, on medicine, that sort of thing. We’re going to be watching that closely as well,” Finer added. “And if Iran spends that money in ways it's not supposed to, we will know. So I think the facts are quite clearly on our side in this debate.”
Further, even Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin felt the need to rebut the false claims coming from Republicans, including Trump who is making his third bid for the White House.
“Well, I think, first of all, Neil, I think you have to push back on some of the statements, that statement there from former President Trump. It’s an exaggeration to suggest that there is any evidence that any of the money that was released as part of that hostage deal,” she said in a report with host Neil Cavuto.
