‘It’s Self-defeating’: Claims of Voting Fraud Hurt Republicans, Georgia Official Says
Marjorie Taylor Greene already has started making baseless accusations
Baseless claims of voter fraud have begun in the battleground state of Georgia, but those false accusations only will serve to hurt Republicans in the state.
That’s according to Georgia’s secretary of state, Republican Brad Raffensperger.
Although a Republican, Raffensperger has long defended the integrity of elections in the Peach State.
He resisted Donald Trump’s demands after the 2020 presidential election to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s narrow — but lawful — victory in the state.
This year, one of Trump’s most reliable allies has already been making unfounded claims about Georgia’s election.
And Raffensperger forcefully debunked those claims by Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, who represents Georgia’s 14th congressional district.
Raffensperger answered, “Absolutely none,” when asked in an interview over the weekend if there was any truth to Greene’s allegations that voting machines were rigged in Whitfield County, Ga.
“Georgia is ranked number one for election integrity by the National Bipartisan Center and we’re at the top of the list by the Heritage Foundation, which is on the hard right side,” he said. “We’re getting high marks from both sides and that just shows you, you know, we’re doing the right thing, it’s easy to vote, we have photo ID for all forms of voting.”
Spurious claims of fraud, like those spread by Greene, only will backfire on Republicans, Raffensperger said.
“Well, at the end of the day, if you start spreading stories like that, all you’re gonna do will really hurt our turnout on our side,” added Raffensperger, in office since 2019. “And I’m a conservative Republican, so I don’t know why they do that. It’s self-defeating.”
