‘It’s Time To Fight Everywhere’: Governor Calls for Mass Protests Against Trump
Growing chorus wants Americans to resist authoritarianism
The Democratic governor of Illinois wants Americans to pour into the streets to protest the authoritarian government of Donald Trump.
JB Pritzker, the wealthy businessman-turned highly progressive executive of the Prairie State, might seem like an unlikely choice to call for a mass mobilization against the Trump administration.
But that’s what he did loudly and clearly Sunday at a De
The governor of Illinois since 2019, Pritzker not only has amassed a highly progressive record in office but has been a leading voice against Trump since the president returned to office earlier this year.
Pritzker even tweaked Trump in February with a proclamation declaring that Lake Michigan would now be “Lake Illinois,” to skewer Trump’s attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
He had a more serious message Sunday at a Democratic Party event in New Hampshire, in which he called for more fight against Trump and his right-wing agenda and received a standing ovation from the crowd.
“Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now,” Pritzker said, to cheers and applause. “These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every megaphone and microphone that we have.
“We must castigate them on the soapbox and then punish them at the ballot box,” he added, to a loud and enthusiastic reception.
Pritzker is one of a growing chorus advocating mass protests in response to the Trump administration, including conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks.
Pritzker’s call to fight is rooted in his own family’s history fleeing authoritarianism and cruelty in Russia in the 20th century as well as the history of the earliest days of Nazi Germany, he said in a separate TV appearance.
“This is something yes, I feel it in my bones because I’ve seen this happen before. And so we’ve got to raise alarm bells to everybody,” he said in that interview. “It’s a five alarm fire, everyone. It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and step out into the streets and speak up and make your voices heard, because that’s the only thing that we have. That’s the power that we have. And we can stop them in their tracks.”
