January 6 Committee’s Kinzinger Fundraises for Biden
Former Republican congressman has endorsed Democrat for president
One of two former Republican members of Congress who participated in the House select committee which investigated Donald Trump and the events surrounding the violent riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, is soliciting funds for President Biden’s reelection campaign.
Along with former congresswoman Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger broke with other Republicans to criticize Trump and seek an accounting — and accountability — for the events of January 6, when violent Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill and tried to illegally keep Trump in power for a second term.
House Republican leadership disbanded the January 6 select committee when they took the House majority in early 2023.
While a pro-Trump Republican in Wyoming defeated Cheney, Kinzinger opted to retire from Congress.
Kinzinger is one of two prominent Republican former office holders — the other being former Georgia lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan — to publicly back the Democratic Biden for a second term over Trump.
And Kinzinger, who once represented a district in Illinois, has taken it one step further. Just hours before Biden and Trump are to meet in Atlanta, Ga, for their first presidential debate, the Biden campaign released a message from Kinzinger asking people to donate to the incumbent president’s reelection effort.
“I'm endorsing Joe Biden for reelection,” Kinzinger wrote. “So, here I am, a Republican asking millions of Americans to rush a donation to help reelect a Democratic president, Joe Biden. Will you donate $20 or even more to President Biden's campaign before tonight's debate?”
He added: “There's too much at stake to sit on the sidelines as Donald Trump threatens the future of America,” with a link to make a donation.
