Joe Manchin Shuts Down Talk of Harris Challenge
WV independent reportedly was eying a presidential run after Biden dropped out
Sen Joe Manchin quashed any suggestion that he might oppose Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee this year.
News began circulating Sunday that the West Virginia independent was considering a bid for president after President Biden's announcement that he would not be running for reelection.
Manchin, however, put talk to bed that he might re-register as a Democrat just to seek the party’s nomination.
The right-leaning senator left the Democratic Party earlier this year and said he will retire rather than try to run for another Senate term.
Manchin, thus far, has been the only likely candidate to emerge thus far to possibly stand in the way of Harris clinching the nomination and run against Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, more than 30 Democratic senators, 150 US representatives and 10 state governors have all gotten in line behind Harris in the 24 hours since Biden said he was dropping out of the 2024 race.
“No, no, I’m not intending to run for any political office and I made that very clear. I’m retiring,” said Manchin, who frequently thwarted Biden’s initiatives in the Senate, in an on-camera MSNBC interview Monday morning. “I’m going to be involved and I like to have a voice and I think I speak for the majority of Americans are in the middle like me, 51 percent of us are registered to participate and vote, but we’re independents.”
