Johnson Tries to Cloud Issue by Claiming Voters ‘Don’t Care’ About Trump’s Records
Trump would be the oldest American to serve as president at the end of his next term
One of Donald Trump’s most reliable allies is trying to run cover for Trump and cloud the issue that, while Vice President Kamala Harris has released her medical records, the former president refuses to do so.
Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson landed in a combative interview Sunday with Meet The Press host Kristen Welker who pressed Johnson on the issue of Trump’s medical records.
Harris last week released her records, which concluded she is in “excellent health” and fit for the presidency.
By contrast, the 78-year-old Trump has refused to do likewise, and if elected next month, would be the oldest American to serve as president by the time his four-year term ends.
He, also, has shown visible signs of erratic behavior such as talking about talking about fictional movie character Hannibal Lecter on the campaign trail and saying nonsensical things at rallies, like, “The stomach is speaking. It always does.”
In his interview with Welker, Johnson repeatedly tried to downplay the importance of Trump’s medical records.
“So it's unnecessary? You can see that he — he didn't release his medical records. You don't want to know things like his cholesterol level, whether he's dealing with any issue that we may not know about, if he's going to be commander-in-chief?” Welker said.
“Kristen, Kristen — ” Johnson interjected, apparently trying to downplay the importance of her line of questioning.
“And he also said he would release cognitive tests, which he aced,” Welker pressed.
“Kristen, listen to your question,” Johnson shot back.
“Should he release that?” Welker asked, clearly trying to do her job as a news interviewer.
“Kristen, the American people don't care about the cholesterol level of Donald Trump,” Johnson said, before going off an unrelated tangent attacking Harris.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Johnson tried to bluff his way through the medical records issue with fact-free hyperbole and puffery — without any basis.
“I saw that Kamala Harris issued her medical records. Congratulations. Donald Trump’s health is on display for the entire country every hour of every day. He has more stamina and mental acumen and strength than any political figure in — probably in the history of the country that I can remember,” the speaker claimed.
