‘Join Me or I’ll Join You’: Biden Makes Pitch to Trump for Border Deal
President asks rival to put bipartisan agreement back on the table
The two presumptive major-party candidates for president this year made dueling appearances Thursday along the nation’s southern border.
However, while Republican Donald Trump engaged in his usual insults and invective, President Biden reached across the aisle to attempt to secure an agreement to revive the bipartisan border security legislation Trump scuttled for political reasons last month.
Immigration across the southern border has become a larger issue for more Americans and a group of bipartisan senators reached a tough compromise bill to curtail much of that immigration.
Biden vowed to sign the legislation into law, prompting Trump to pressure fellow Republicans to walk away from the deal.
Each presidential contender — Biden and Trump — now is taking his position on the campaign trail.
On Thursday that brought both men to the border in southern Texas, where Biden acknowledged the former president’s own visit nearby.
“I understand my predecessor is in Eagle Pass today. So here’s what I would say to Mr. Trump: Instead of playing politics with the issue, instead of telling members of Congress to block this legislation, join me or I’ll join you in telling the Congress to pass this bipartisan border security bill. We can do it together,” Biden said. “You know and I know it’s the toughest, most efficient, most effective border security bill this country has ever seen.
“So instead of playing politics with the issue, why don’t we just get together and get it done?” Biden asked. “Unless you don’t remember who the heck you work for. We work for the American people, not the Democratic Party, or the Republican Party.”
