Judiciary Committee Democrat on Trump’s Acting AG’s Testimony: Some Kind of Criminal Charges May Be Appropriate
Senators will seek to find if Jeffrey Clark was working with others to undermine 2020 election results
Jeffrey Clark, then a top Justice Department official and close ally of Donald Trump's, urged his colleagues to co-sign on a letter that would've called on lawmakers in Georgia to investigate potential voter fraud in the state before the results of the election were certified in Congress on Jan. 6.
Clark was going all-in to spread Trump's “Big Lie,” that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen — and was actively advocating others take extraordinary steps against certifying Joe Biden's lawful and legitimate election as president of the United States.
Copies of the draft letter were obtained by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and reported by ABC News.
Clark was also promulgating an outlandish conspiracy theory, telling senior officials that China used thermostats to change ballots in the 2020 presidential election.
Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have begun investigating the actions of Clark — and anyone else who may have been working in concert with him.
“Well, it may have been more than just Jeffrey Clark. It may have been others in the Trump orbit and that's the focus of our investigation going forward,” said Sen Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), a member of the judiciary panel. “There is a lot of reason to believe that more individuals than just Jeffrey Clark participated in this scheme. And there is more than ample reason to think that some kind of criminal charges may be appropriate. We will be working on a report.”
Asked what sort of criminal charges, Blumenthal replied, “Well, again, I'm not going to go into the details at this point, we know that there is more than ample evidence to refer to the Department of Justice, at least for its consideration, at least I feel at this point.
“But the chairman of the committee, Dick Durbin, is going to make a decision about the witnesses going forward, and we should hear from them, but the American people also should see and hear all of these evidence that you've been asking about,” Blumenthal added.
