Kamala Harris Shuts Down ‘Lock Him Up’ Chant: ‘The Courts Are Going to Handle’
Contrast to Trump’s 2016 rallies and the treatment of Hillary Clinton
Vice President Kamala Harris drew an important contrast between her and Donald Trump Wednesday at a boisterous rally in Wisconsin.
Eight years ago, crowds at Trump rallies would spontaneously chant, “Lock her up!” referring to his Democratic opponent at the time, Hillary Clinton. And Trump mostly just stood there and soaked it in, without any thoughts about the larger issues of the rule of law.
Fast-forward to today and it’s Harris and Trump facing off, and the former president himself is a convicted felon many times over.
Harris was leading her own rally in the battleground of Eau Claire, Wis., and she was employing what has become a usual jab at Trump, contrasting her background as a prosecutor and state attorney general with the former president and his record in court.
“I know his type. In fact, I’ve been dealing with people like him my whole career. For example, as attorney general of California —” Harris began.
Recalling those 2016 Trump rallies, someone in the crowd wanted to turn the tables and began their own chant of: “Lock him up!”
Which the vice president gently, but firmly, shut down in a sign of respect to due process and the rule of law.
“Well, hold on, you know what, the courts are going to handle that part of it. What we’re going to do is beat him in November,” she said, to applause from those in the audience.
