‘Keep Our Heads High and Have The Back of This President’
California’s Newsom offers fiery defense of Biden after the debate
California’s Democratic governor rose up in a passionate defense of President Biden following a lackluster debate performance which has left many wondering whether Biden should be replaced as the Democratic nominee.
Biden offered a halting and sometimes confused performance Thursday evening I'm his first face-off against his presumptive opponent this year, Donald Trump, causing many in the media — and even some Democrats — to suggest that Biden should step aside for reelection and let a younger, more-forceful candidate take his place.
Gov Gavin Newsom, long one of Biden’s most loyal surrogates, forcefully rejected that notion in an on-camera interview with MSNBC following the debate in Atlanta, Ga.
Newsom called the panic that has set in among some Democrats about Biden’s candidacy — as well as suggestions that the president step aside for reelection — “unhelpful” and “unnecessary.”
“We keep winning and have to keep our mind,” he said. “For all of us: Worry less and do more. An opportunity to turn the page and put our heads down and universally have the back of this president who has had our backs. You go home with the one who brought you to the dance.”
Newsom suggested that loyalty to Biden and support for the president’s accomplishments should be paramount for Democrats.
“We have to go in and keep our heads high and have the back of this president,” he said. “You do not turn your back because of one performance. What kind of party does that?
“It has been a masterclass,” Newsom said of Biden’s presidency. “This president has delivered. We need to deliver for him at this moment.”
