Led By Marjorie Taylor Greene, House Republicans Go After GOP Senators Backing Gun Reform
Bipartisan gun safety bill is the product of bipartisan talks following the school massacre in Uvalde Texas
Led by Georgia Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene, members of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus have begun attacking the Republican senators who Tuesday advanced a bipartisan gun reform bill.
The House Republicans are angry at the 14 Republican senators who voted with all the Senate Democrats to advance the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act as an answer to the deadly wave of mass shootings which have become ever-more-commonplace across the United States.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) late last month tasked Texas Republican Sen John Cornyn to negotiate with Democrats to arrive at a bipartisan deal to approve some measure of gun safety reform following the school shooting in Cornyn's home state, in which a gunman murdered some 21 children and their teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde Texas.
Some 14 Senate Republicans voted to advance the legislation which was the product of those talks, which would include support for states enforcing “red flag” laws, offer mental health services, and close the “boyfriend loophole.”
But even these modest steps are too much for Greene and other far-right House Republicans.
With members of the House Freedom Caucus looking on, Greene called for the 14 Republican senators who voted for the gun bill to be voted out of office.
Those 14 included McConnell, Sens Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina; Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska; Rob Portman, of Ohio; Mitt Romney, of Utah; Thomas Tillis, of North Carolina; and Todd Young of Indiana.
“Lindsey Graham, who promised me just a few years ago that he would not violate due-process rights with red flag laws, broke his promise. Mitch McConnell: A complete failure to Republicans,” said Greene, who is most known for her outlandish conspiracy beliefs, such as the debunked QAnon and an idea that wildfires in California were started by lasers in outer space owned by Jewish people. “Murkowski, Portman, Romney, Tillis, Young: These are Republican senators that Republican voters do not support anymore. We've gotta change our Republican Party, and it has to happen right here.”
Several of the Republican senators who voted to advance the legislation are already retiring at the end of the year, including Portman.
