Lindsey Graham And His Proposed National Abortion Ban Are Torched
Republican hypocrisy on the issue is criticized
Sen Lindsey Graham and the national abortion ban that he introduced Tuesday both came under withering fire, from across the political spectrum.
The South Carolina Republican introduced legislation which would ban all abortion in the United States after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except for cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
Abortion rights have been under assault in the United States since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade earlier this year, upending half a century of national abortion rights.
Top Democrats slammed the Graham legislation, and vowed that it would not move forward as long as they maintain the majority in Congress.
“The nationwide abortion ban proposal put forth today is the latest, clearest signal of extreme MAGA Republicans intent to criminalize women’s health freedom in all 50 states and arrest doctors for providing basic care,” tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Others took Graham and the Republican hypocrisy around abortion rights to task.
“Lindsey Graham began explaining his federal abortion ban legislation by saying: ‘I picked 15 weeks…’ Watching a man say ‘I picked' as it relates to legislation controlling women's reproductive rights was about the most on-brand Republican move I've seen Vote, folks,” posted USA Today columnist Rex Huppke.
Progressive podcaster and YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen also noted Graham's distinct lack of credentials for legislating in this area.
“Just a reminder that the person crafting national legislation stripping you of your reproductive rights, Lindsey Graham, has no children, no significant other, no family, but is perfectly content to tell you how and when you should have yours,” he posted.
Democratic attorney and social media influencer Ron Filipkowski blasted the hypocrisy Graham's legislation represents after decades of Republicans insisting that abortion rights ought to be left to the states.
“Lindsey Graham just took a flamethrower to every carefully crafted Republican narrative designed to fool voters about their intentions on abortion. The American people can now see very clearly what they intend to do,” he tweeted.
Even the “Never Trumper” Republican organization, the Lincoln Project, to task for the proposed abortion ban as an example of Graham's history of political flip-flopping.
“Lindsey Graham is exactly what we always said he was - a power-hungry untrustworthy flip flopper. Never believe a word that comes out of his mouth,” the organization said.
