Marjorie Taylor Greene's Very Ukraine Disinformation Wednesday
Begun with a snub, congresswoman ends day with bizarre "address to the nation"
Right-wing Republican congresswoman — and near-constant outrage generator — Marjorie Taylor Greene spent all day Wednesday seemingly doing all she could to undermine continued US support for the embattled nation of Ukraine.
The day started, of course, with the first-term Georgia lawmaker and Donald Trump acolyte refusing to join her colleagues in their standing ovation for Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's address to a joint session of Congress via video.
As the day progressed, Greene — known as a believer in the QAnon conspiracy theory, as well as the outrageous idea that lasers in outer space owned by Jewish people are responsible for California wildfires — posted a series of inaccurate tweets aimed at trying to undercut American support for the people of Ukraine, as they fight back against Russian leader Vladimir Putin's lawless incursion into their country.
However, retired Lt Col Alexander Vindman, a former official with the White House National Security Council (NSC) offered a rebuttal to Greene’s disinformation.
“Nope. It’s because you and your pro-Putin party encouraged Putin to invade, by cheerleading him. Worse yet, you undermined @POTUS efforts to signal punishing costs… you undermined U.S. efforts deter the war. You have blood in your hands. The American people will not forget,” Vindman tweeted.
However, not to be deterred, Greene appeared in an online video — billed as “Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene addresses the nation” — to spread further falsehoods.
She claims that both sides are at fault in the conflict in Ukraine, despite the fact that Russian forces invaded unprovoked.
Greene also claimed that the Ukraine government only exists because of former president Barack Obama, and that President Biden, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican Sen Mitt Romney have financial interests in the country.
The truth is that Ukraine has been an independent country since 1991 with the breakup of the Soviet Union.
