Maryland's Republican governor, Larry Hogan, spent much of his eight-year tenure very much as in opposition to Donald Trump.
He piloted his state through the pandemic very much at odds with the Trump White House.
He called on Trump to concede following the 2020 election and allow a smooth transition to President Joe Biden.
He traveled to President Ronald Reagan's California Presidential Library to deliver an anti-Trump speech in the library's “A Time For Choosing” series.
And most recently, he and Trump fought a nasty proxy battle over the Republican nomination for the next candidate to run to succeed Hogan.
Hogan's hand-picked successor lost to a Trump-endorsed hopeful who fully embraces all of Trump's election lies.
So perhaps it should raise some eyebrows that Hogan — a businessman, not an attorney — should now choose to issue a statement which would seem to back Trump's contention that the Monday FBI raid conducted on his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate was somehow politically motivated.
This, even though a federal judge would had to have signed off on the search warrant for the raid to have happened.
“Even before yesterday's events at Mar-a-Lago, America was dangerously divided,” Hogan said in his statement. “These are unprecedented circumstances that require unprecedented transparency and accountability from our government institutions. The American people deserve to know all of the facts as soon as possible, and I call on the Biden administration to release — at a minimum — the documents authorizing the FBI search.
“If the federal government cannot ultimately provide overwhelming evidence that action was absolutely necessary, then it will only undermine faith in democracy and the rule of law, and further divide Americans.”
