McAuliffe, Virginia Governor's Vanquished Rival, Reemerges To Fight For Mask Mandates
"Let’s leave behind the politics and let our better angels prevail so we can keep our kids safely in school,” former governor encourages
Democrat Terry McAuliffe, the former Virginia governor defeated in November in his bid at a comeback, has resurfaced for the first time since his opponent, Republican Glenn Youngkin, was sworn in over the weekend as the new governor of the Old Dominion.
At issue is Youngkin's executive push — over the objections of a number of local school districts — to do away with mask mandates in Virginia classrooms.
While these local districts push back against Youngkin's directive to drop all mask mandates, the governor reportedly has set Monday as the day school districts must come into compliance with his “no mask mandates” policy.
Youngkin now even faces a lawsuit on the matter of masks in schools.
It was into this politically charged atmosphere that the man whom Youngkin beat in the election — Democrat Terry McAuliffe — inserted himself Friday by trying to prevail upon Youngkin to reverse course.
“The coming chaos that Monday’s ‘masks off' order will bring comes at the worst possible time for Virginia as we fight this pandemic. Let’s leave behind the politics and let our better angels prevail so we can keep our kids safely in school,” the former governor tweeted.
