‘My Constitutional Duty’: Harris To Certify Election Results And Her Own Defeat
Monday to look very different at the Capitol compared to January 6 four years ago
Monday will look very different at the US Capitol than it did on this day in 2021.
Four years ago, a mob of violent supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington DC in a riotous insurrection that — for a brief time — threw into doubt the peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election.
Today, though, Vice President Kamala Harris intends to preside over Trump’s impending return to the White House and her own defeat in the 2024 election.
Although Harris intends to show off a crucial hallmark of American democracy, that Trump is returning to the presidency is a sign that his “Big Lie” worked.
As with many US vice presidents before her, Harris plans to certify an election that affirms her own loss in seeking the highest office in the land.
“The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy. As much as any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from monarchy or tyranny,” Harris said in a video posted to her official social media account. “Today, at the United States Capitol, I will perform my constitutional duty as vice president of the United State to certify the results of the 2024 election. This duty is a sacred obligation, one I will uphold guided by love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and my unwavering faith in the American people.
“As we have seen, our democracy can be fragile and it is up to then each one of us to stand up for our most cherished principles and to make sure that in America, our government always remains of the people, by the people, and for the people,” added Harris, who has been largely out of the public spotlight since her election loss.
Trump’s return to power, however, also affirms his “Big Lie,” which is the oft-repeated false claims that Democrats stole the 2020 election from him through fraud, according to the author of a book on the subject.
“Yeah, the big lie won. And Donald Trump is still very much living the big lie,” said Jonathan Lemire, author of The Big Lie: Election Chaos, Political Opportunism, and the State of American Politics After 2020. “Just this past weekend, now just two odd weeks before he takes power, again, on the eve of this January 6, he screened a documentary at Mar-a-Lago about John Eastman, who was one of the lawyers in the fake electors, one of the lawyers whose efforts were to overturn the election.
“He gathered Rudy Giuliani, Michael Flynn, Peter Navarro and others. These were all people, many of whom were deeply involved with the efforts to steal the election. They gathered with Donald Trump this weekend at Mar-a-Lago,” Lemire added. “Also, I’m told, speaking to people close to the former president, they’re considering up to a thousand acts of clemency or pardons for those involved with the January 6 insurrection.”
