‘My Presidency Will Not Be a Continuation of Joe Biden’s Presidency’
In separate comments, the president and vice president signaled changes would come
For anyone in doubt, Vice President Kamala Harris intends to chart her own course in the White House.
And President Biden’s made clear that he both expects and supports that.
The pair’s comments this week should give Harris running room during the final weeks of the presidential campaign, as well as in her term in the Oval Office, should she be elected next month.
Nearly since she unexpectedly jumped into the presidential contest in July, Harris has been beset with questions across the political spectrum about just how she would be different than the man she has served as vice president for nearly four years.
This week, both she and Biden made clear that there are likely to be noticable differences.
During her contentious appearance Wednesday on Fox News, interviewer Bret Baier pressed Harris about what she would do differently than Biden has.
“Let me be very clear: My presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency,” she replied.
Just days earlier during separate remarks, Biden made clear that he both accepts and approves of his vice president charting her own course.
He told a labor union audience in Philadelphia, Pa, Tuesday that there was much more work to be done, including reducing the cost of housing, childcare, eldercare, and more.
But, Biden said that he expects Harris to do it her own way, if elected president.
“Every president has to cut their own path,” he said. “That’s what I did. I was loyal to Barack Obama, but I cut my own path as president. And that’s what Kamala is going to do. She’ll be — she’s been loyal so far, but she’s going to cut her own path.”
Biden quickly added, “Folks, Kamala will take the country in her own direction. And that’s one of the most important differences in this election. Kamala’s perspective on our problems will be fresh and new.
“Donald Trump’s perspective is old and failed and, quite frankly, thoroughly, totally dishonest,” he said.
