NBC News Host Confronts Republican Senator In Remarkable Exchange
Chuck Todd calls out Ron Johnson over right-winger's allegation of bias
Chuck Todd, host of the venerable NBC News Sunday talk show, Meet The Press, took on Republican Sen Ron Johnson in a tough and astonishing on-camera encounter.
Johnson, of Wisconsin, and who just won reelection to a third term in the November midterm elections, attempted to push Todd off his line of questioning by attempting to dig in his heels with baseless Republican talking points of “bias” and “misinformation on both sides,” while blaming “the left.”
Considering how traditionally deferential Sunday news hosts are towards their guests, Todd's pushback against the MAGA-associated Johnson was a remarkable acknowledgement that sometimes a guest just isn't offering news value to a news program's most important constituency: it's audience.
Johnson had joined Todd as a guest remotely from Ft Myers, Fla.
EXCERPT:
JOHNSON: “And that's part of the things that -- part of the reasons our politics are inflamed is we do not have an unbiased media. We don't. It's unfortunate. I'm all for a free press."
TODD: "Well, Senator -- "
JOHNSON: "It needs to be more unbiased."
TODD: "Senator, look, this is -- "
JOHNSON: "There's misinformation on both sides -- "
TODD: "Look, go to partisan -- "
JOHNSON: " -- but the censorship and suppression -- "
TODD: "Senator -- Senator, look, we’re trying to do issues here and facts."
JOHNSON: " -- primarily occurs on the left. It's frustrating."
TODD: "Look, you can go back on your partisan cable cocoon and talk about media bias all you want. I understand it's part of your identity. Let me move to what happened in Brazil."
