New Republican Excuse: Former Trump Aide Tries to Compare Harris Surge to ‘Sugar High’
But why won't Trump debate?
Republicans and allies of Donald Trump, struggling with the nascent surge in support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s bid for the White House now are trying to explain away that burst of enthusiasm as ephemeral as a “sugar high.”
That’s precisely how a former Trump aide characterized the momentum at Harris’s back since President Biden dropped out of the race and threw his weight behind his vice president.
The new, unexpected Harris for President campaign reported raising some $200 million and signing up more than 170,000 new volunteers in its first week.
And even though it’s Trump who won’t commit to debating the presumptive Democratic nominee, a one-time aide is trying to wave away Harris’s astounding level of support.
“What we‘re witnessing is a sugar high. It’s like, the Democrats and maybe some independents are relieved that it‘s not Joe Biden. They’re like, ‘Thank God it’s somebody, thank God it’s Harris,’” said Bryan Lanza, who served as a deputy communications director for Trump’s 2016 campaign. “But what happens with every sugar high? We all crash at the end of it. And they‘re going to crash once they start dissecting her record.”
But if that’s the case, why isn’t Trump willing to debate? asked Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked for Trump in White House but has become a public critic of the former president.
“But then why hedge on debating? Because first it was, ‘Oh, well, Obama hasn’t endorsed.’ Then Obama endorsed. Then it’s, ‘Well, we were going to, but it’s Joe Biden.’”
