New Republican Select Committee ‘Is About Attacking Law Enforcement,’ Senior Democrat Says
New panel will focus on settling political scores related to Donald Trump, McGovern adds
The House select committee which investigated the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, insurrection is no more.
It faded into the history books the moment last week that Republicans took their control of the House of Representatives.
In its place, the new right-wing majority has introduced a new, separate panel, on what Republicans call the "weaponization of the federal government."
The new subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee would have extraordinary power to investigate any part of the federal government for perceived wrongdoing against conservatives -- the Justice Department and FBI, in particular.
It's really about “settling scores,” politically, according to a senior Democratic lawmaker.
“Republicans claim to care about law enforcement. But this new committee is about attacking law enforcement. It's about going after people. It's about destroying people's careers and lives,” Rep Jim McGovern, of Massachusetts, said Tuesday on the House floor. “It's about undermining the Department of Justice, defunding the police, and settling scores on behalf of the twice impeached and disgraced former occupant of the Oval Office.
“The MAGA extremist fringe of the Republican Party will use this committee to push QAnon conspiracy theories and lies from TRUTH Social,” said McGovern, ranking member of the House Rules Committee, referring to Donald Trump's own social media provider.
