NH Governor Downplays Importance of Violent Insurrection With Support for Trump
Issues like the border and inflation are higher priorities, according to Sununu
Confronted over his willingness to support Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for president, New Hampshire’s governor said that Trump’s incitement of violent insurrection is “way down on the list” of priorities for voters.
Gov Chris Sununu has been backing Trump's rival for the nomination, one-time South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. But he also signaled a willingness to back Trump if he prevails in winning the nomination.
Attention has shifted to Sununu’s Granite State and its primary election next week after Trump won Iowa’s first-in-the-nation contest for the nomination Monday evening.
Although he has endorsed Haley, Sununu recently has begun allowing that he ultimately would support Trump if the former president wins the right to face President Biden in November.
As recently as last month, Sununu was complaining that Republicans needed an alternative to Trump — someone who would “not be distracted with legal issues.”
MSNBC host Katy Tur confronted the governor, in an on-camera interview, over his shift.
“Do you not think January 6 was a big deal?” she asked, referring to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol Building by violent supporters of Trump, who Trump instigated in an unlawful attempt to hold onto power.
“Well, of course it was. No, absolutely, of course it was. The election denial on January 6 — but understand something,” Sununu replied. “When it comes to the Republican primary, those issues do not really come to bear in the Republican primary for the voters. They just don’t. They’re way down on the list of priority.
“People want to know the border is going to be secured. They want to know that inflation is going to be taken care of. They want to know there’s going to be fiscal responsibility and they’re going to treat their tax dollars with respect, which nobody in Washington has done for a long time,” he added. “Those are the issues driving it. January 6 and election denial are not key issues on the Republican voters’ minds right now.”
