‘No President in American History Has Made Appointments as Diverse as President Biden’
Democrats push back against Republican cries of quotas, racism
President Biden's commitment to expand diversity within the federal judiciary is a virtue which will benefit the nation.
And Republican attempts to tar Biden for holding to his commitment to install the first Black woman on the US Supreme Court are entirely hypocritical.
This is according to Democrats in Washington DC who are pushing back — hard — against Republicans who are criticizing the president for it, even going so far as to call it racist.
Biden last week reiterated his intention to nominate a Black female jurist to the nation's highest court, to fill the vacancy expected by Justice Stephen Breyer's announcement that he will retire this year after the court’s current term comes to an end.
The president's commitment to diversity has been apparent throughout his nominations to vacancies across the federal bench, according to Sen Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
“No president in American history, none, has made appointments as diverse as President Biden. This morning in the Judiciary Committee we had testimony from three women nominees, the federal bench,” Blumenthal said Tuesday. “One, a woman of Japanese descent, whose parents were interned during World War II. Another, a Native American woman who grew up on a Navajo reservation. These kinds of appointees have broken new ground.
“Never before has any president made the federal bench look like the people of America,” he added. “This diversity and inclusiveness strengthens the federal bench and that’s what President Biden will do with his nominee to the United States Supreme Court.”
Republicans continued attacking Biden, however, including Sen Ted Cruz, of Texas.
“The Democrats are so casually racist that they’ll make that promise, and not only that, it ends up being insulting to African-American women,” he said. “There are Black women who are very talented jurists who may well be the appropriate nominee, but when Biden starts out by saying he has a quota system, he diminishes the achievements of those African-American women.”
White House press secretary Jen Psaki struck back at Cruz, labeling him a hypocrite.
“Just over a year ago, the previous president also promised to select a woman for the Supreme Court. Not only were there no complaints about choosing a nominee from a specific demographic from the same corners, but there was widespread praise of now Justice [Amy Coney] Barrett on those grounds, with Republican lawmakers widely highlighting that they thought this was positive for women in America,” Psaki said. “So, take Senator Cruz himself. He had no objection to Donald Trump promising he’d nominate a woman in 2020. Repeat: no objection at all. In fact, he praised her on these grounds, the nominee. During her confirmation hearing, Senator Cruz said 'I think you’re an amazing role model for little girls. What advice would you give little girls’
“When President [Ronald] Reagan honored his campaign pledge to place the first woman on the court, he said it symbolized the unique American opportunity. There is no outcry around that,” Psaki added.
