‘Nobody Can Have Any Confidence If the Republicans Win the House’
Democrats go hard at the idea of a Republican takeover
Democrats are painting the outcome of a potential Republican takeover of Congress in the November elections as obstructionist and deeply irresponsible, just as Republicans try to regain the momentum with voters they appear to have lost over the last several weeks.
With Democrats defending their razor-thin majorities in both houses of Congress in November, they've seen electoral momentum shift towards them in the weeks since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and upended half a century of national abortion rights.
Republican leaders, however, have begun touting a vague agenda, called their “Commitment With America,” which they promise to follow if voters give them back political power.
In truth, however, a Republican congressional majority would lead only to confrontation — not cooperation — with President Biden, Democratic lawmakers argue.
“Let me just be blunt. I don’t care what it says in that document, I will tell you what will happen if the Republicans they control the Congress,” Rep Ro Khanna (D-Calif) said. “They will be talking about Hunter Biden the whole time. As it happened last, week there was a hearing on oversight about how to get peoples lives to be better, all they wanted to do was have Hunter Biden. All they wanted to do is have investigations into this presidency.
“If we give them the power, it will be two years of obstructionism. If the Democrats are never gonna do more to actually lower prices for the middle class to create for manufacturing jobs,” Khanna added, in a recent on-camera appearance on MSNBC. “They put in a bunch of stuff on crime and border. That is not what they tend to do if they win.”
Further, Republicans will focus almost solely on impeachment and the potential to ensure that Donald Trump's reinstalled as president, whether Trump were to win fairly or not, according to Rep David Cicilline (D-RI).
"I don’t think there isn’t a question. It won’t be limited to the president. They will move to impeach cabinet officers, they will occupy the Judiciary Committee with lots of specious arguments about the president, and his administration, in an effort, again, to undermine the work of the president, the work of the administration, and, really, to undermine the things that we have gotten done for the American people,” Cicilline added in a separate interview. “We have put people over politics by delivering on all important priorities to the American people. They are in a quest for power, at all costs. They are promoting the big lie still, they are undermining democracy, they are refusing to reform the electoral count. These folks have lost the right to control our economy, our health care, for our democracy.”
Democrats appear to have Republicans' own words to support their view.
Rep Matt Gaetz (R-Fla), under federal investigation, appeared on right-wing media to push the need to emphasize impeachment over all else.
If Republicans don’t immediately begin impeachment of Biden and Cabinet officials if they get the majority “our voters will feel betrayed” heading into 2024, “and that’s why it should be investigations first, and policy as a far, far diminished priority,” Gaetz said.
