‘Not A Penny’: Bad News for Ted Cruz As He Whines Mitch McConnell Won’t Help Him
Republican in dogfight with Democrat Colin Allred over Texas Senate seat
Republican Sen Ted Cruz is moaning that he’s getting no help from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s super PAC for his tough bid to hold onto his seat for a third term.
Cruz was on Fox News complaining that he is seeing “not a penny” from McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund for the second time he’s been up for reelection.
Cruz is a neck-and-neck race with Democratic Rep Colin Allred. He won his second term six years ago by fewer than 3 percentage points, as the Lone Star State has steadily drifted less Republican in recent years.
Allred defeating Cruz could be crucial to Democratic hopes of maintaining their slim majority in the Senate.
Cruz, however, has long been an antagonist against McConnell’s leadership.
Fox News host Mark Levin told Cruz that he assumes that McConnell is helping fund Cruz’s campaign this year for the sake of Republicans gaining Senate control.
“Sadly, no. Not a penny. So, Mitch McConnell runs the largest Republican super PAC in the country, it has $400 million. But that super PAC is used to reward the Republican senators who obey him and to punish those who dare to stand up to him,” Cruz said. “As you noted, 2018, I was in what was at the time the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history. I was being outspent three-to-one. [McConnell] had $300 million, he spent zero in Texas. I won anyway, but barely, by less than 3 points.
“This time around he has $400 million, I am being massively outspent again,” Cruz added.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is spending “millions,” on the Texas race and yet McConnell “spent zero,” he said.
“By the way, he does the same thing for any other senator. So, Ron Johnson in 2016 in Wisconsin had a very tough competitive race. Mitch spent zero to support him,” Cruz said. “Ron won anyway. Mike Lee in 2022 had an unexpectedly tight race in Utah. Again, Mitch spent zero to support him because — and, you know, people wonder at home, how come no Republicans stand up and have courage and stand up to Mitch in leadership?
“The answer is, if you stand up and say ‘No,’ it costs you 10 or 20 or 30 or even $40 million. Well, I am not willing to just obey his orders, which means the only way I survive is the viewers of this show, patriots across this country go on to TedCruz.org, give in generously, so that we have the resources to communicate with the voters,” he added.
