‘Not A Word On This About This From Democratic Leaders Today’
Feeling abandoned as they’re under siege, many DC residents remain defiant
Residents of Washington DC are feeling abandoned by Democratic leaders as they prepare to enter the second week of Donald Trump’s militarized takeover of law enforcement in the city.
But many continue, themselves, to remain defiant and find new ways to resist the growing presence of both National Guard troops and unidentified federal agents swarming the nation’s capital.
Trump last week announced that he was both sending National Guard troops into Washington DC, while also taking direct federal control of the city’s police department. Now Republican governors from several red states — including Ohio, South Carolina and West Virginia — are sending hundreds of their own National Guard troops into Washington DC to assist the Trump takeover.
Reports — and video on social media — have begun surfacing of federal law enforcement harassing random DC residents.
And the scene that’s become all too familiar across the country — unidentified and often, masked, agents snatching away migrants without due process — has now come to the leafy streets of the capital.
Residents are complaining that the Democrats who claim to oppose Trump and his authoritarianism are conspicuously silent about the moves against the residents.
Such was the case with Jesse Berney, a local writer and political activist who once worked for the Democratic National Committee.
Berney posted video of federal agents subduing one person with the caption: “These guys could be anyone. @mayorbowser.bsky.social why are you allowing masked, unidentified people with guns to stalk our streets?”
He tagged DC Mayor Muriel Bowser in his post, adding, “Why aren't you protecting the people of DC?”
But, in the midst of this violence and chaos, Bowser herself left town for Martha’s Vineyard which drew complaints.
Brandon Friedman, CEO of Rakkasan Tea Co after a career in politics and public relations, found even more Democrats MIA.
“Not a word about this from Democratic leaders today,” he said of the same video of the migrant apprehension.
In particular, Democrats on the House and Senate Armed Services committees should be intervening, according to Friedman.
“If Democratic HASC and SASC leaders aren't on the phone with current AND former service chiefs tonight getting assurances that the active duty military won't follow unlawful orders, then they are derelict in their duties,” he posted.
Residents, too, have begun protesting the increased federal presence.
Others have found unique ways to resist, such as the woman who recorded video of three individuals who appeared to be loitering outside a DC establishment whom she questioned were off-duty agents with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“The goons were approaching local Mt. Pleasant establishments asking them to become ICE snitches,” posted journalist Brad Johnson, referring to a well-established neighborhood in the city.
Friedman also posted the video of the woman confronting the three, and he commented, “Whoever filmed this is a patriot.”
